This episode addresses the blurred boundaries that can occur when a patient from inside your practice becomes, or could become a friend outside your practice. We want to make the distinction between treating an established friend and treating someone who started out as an established patient and then became a friend. The second situation is more complex and potentially more difficult to navigate. It requires the former-patient-now-friend to acknowledge when we’re functioning in which relationship. That’s not always in their awareness or their ability, so we want you to be considering how you would handle this situation.
