About

We developed Osteopathy Unplugged out of our passion for Osteopathy and the recognition that our profession needs a more intimate conversation about who we are and what we do. We interweave the philosophy of Osteopathy with clinical relevance and reveal our inner vision into the real-world workings of how we practice and live Osteopathy as a way of being. We are creating a comprehensive "textbook" of Osteopathic Clinical Philosophy based upon the 21st century oral tradition of podcasting. The foundational episodes will be free of charge, wherever you get your podcasts. The complete collection will only be offered at: www.patreon.com/osteopathyunplugged

My life has been devoted to the integration of three interrelated fields of immersion: Osteopathy, the movement and breathing awareness practice called Continuum, and meditation. I have explored many approaches to expanding my perceptual field and cultivating awareness, and then I have found ways to integrate my discoveries into how I care for myself, others, and the world in which I live. I retired from private practice in 2009 when I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. I realized that my life depended on learning to apply to myself what I had been teaching my patients. I currently devote my efforts to teaching, writing, and now, podcasting. I am a 1986 graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and have taught Osteopathic Principles and Practice and manipulative medicine worldwide for many organizations including the Osteopathic Cranial Academy, the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation, the American Academy of Osteopathy, the European School of Osteopathy, Deutsche Akademie fur Osteopathische Medizin, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and with James Jealous, DO. For five years I was the course director for the Cranial Academy’s 40-hour Introductory Course, Co-Director of the 1993 Cranial Academy Conference, and served on the Board of Directors of the Osteopathic Cranial Academy. • I became Board Certified in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in 1994. • I have been a Continuum teacher since 1996. • I was awarded Fellowship in the Cranial Academy in 2013. • I was honored with The Sutherland Memorial Lecture in 2014. • I became a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher in 2010. I am the author of Engaging the Movement of Life: Exploring Health and Embodiment Through Osteopathy and Continuum, published in 2007 by North Atlantic Books. My innovative approach, combining Osteopathy, Mindfulness, and Continuum expands the possibilities of experiencing the sense of wholeness that underlies these three seemingly separate approaches as she guides people to experience Osteopathic concepts in themselves and develop the perceptual skills to more deeply care for self and others.

When my patients ask me, “What kind of doctor are you?” I reply that I am a Physiologist, an Osteopath, and a Family Doctor. I use all three of these uniquely interconnected viewpoints to make a diagnosis and to treat using Osteopathic Manipulation. There is a way of being with holism that each of these disciplines offers. Each perspective provides a different window to view the complicated ways in which a human being—presenting as a patient—comes to me seeking help. Becoming a patient is not a failure, but a recognition that this individual can no longer engage their self-healing forces alone and need the help of an expert to guide them to health and healing. I have spent my entire career studying the art and science of Osteopathy. I have a special interest in the elaborate and complicated teachings of the founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still. In the mid-1990s I scanned all four of Still’s books and began to search for patterns. I utilized key words to organize his ideas into a comprehensive philosophy of Osteopathy. This podcast is the culmination of my historical research combined with extensive direct patient care mixed with the wisdom of my life experience. Education and Training: • 1981: Completed Masters in Science in Physiology at Ohio State University, performing basic science research in muscle physiology. • 1985: Graduated from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. • 1988: Fulfilled an MD Family Medicine residency at the University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine. • 1994: Earned a Fellowship of the American Academy of Family Physicians. • 1994: Achieved Board Certification in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. In addition, I have formally studied Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Homeopathic Medicine, nutrition, and many other integrative medicine approaches. I am a yoga teacher as well as meditation teacher. I have given over 150, 000 Osteopathic Treatments in over three decades of clinical practice. For 15 years I taught workshops in Osteopathic Clinical Philosophy in Canada, France, Germany, Finland, Austria, and the United States. This podcast brings to the greater public my vision of Osteopathy through the unique lens of Osteopathic philosophy.
